DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 14: The celebration of Losar, the Tibetan New Year, has stirred controversy in Belleville Township, New Jersey. Despite objections from the Chinese Consulate, Mayor Michael Melham of the Township in New Jersey, proceeded to hoist the Tibetan national flag on February 9, 2024.

Last week, as part of the Losar celebrations, Mayor Michael Melham presided over the hoisting of the Tibetan national flag at the town hall. The incident occurred amidst a letter from Chinese Consul General Huang Ping, urging Mayor Melham to cancel the event, denouncing the flag as a symbol of “an illegal separatist political group.”

In his written response to Consul Huang Ping, Mayor Michael Melham stated, “Here in Belleville, New Jersey, we pride ourselves on fostering an environment of inclusivity and acceptance, regardless of nationality or territorial affiliation. Our community’s rich history is deeply rooted in these principles, shaping the very essence of who we are.”

“It’s essential to clarify that our intentions are not aimed at challenging the sovereignty of any nation. Instead, our gesture symbolizes solidarity with the Tibetan people and their aspirations for freedom and self-determination,” the Mayor said. “We stand with the Tibetan people in their struggle for autonomy and respect for their cultural heritage,” he continued, urging Consul Huang Ping to explore Belleville’s “fascinating Chinese history, which spans over a century and a half.”

“As a Township, we remain committed to fostering understanding, dialogue, and mutual respect among all peoples, both locally and globally,” he further said.

Mayor Melham’s decision has garnered widespread support from various quarters across the United States and Canada. An outpouring of messages came in solidarity with his bold stance, reflecting solidarity with the principles of freedom of expression and cultural celebration.
