Dhasa United edge out Dhondupling FC to win 28th GCM Cup

DHARAMSHALA, June 12: In a captivating and hard-fought battle, Dhasa United emerged triumphant against the formidable Dhondupling FC to clinch their first-ever Gyalyum Chenmo Memorial Gold Cup title at the Upper TCV School ground in Dharamshala on Sunday. The final match of the tournament proved to be an enthralling spectacle, leaving football fans on the edge of their seats until the last whistle.

The game began with both teams exhibiting remarkable determination and skill, fully aware of the significance of the occasion. As the first half unfolded, it became evident that the encounter would be a tightly contested affair, with each side striving to find a breakthrough. The defensive lines of both teams remained resolute, denying their opponents any clear goal-scoring opportunities. Despite the intense competition, the first half concluded without either team managing to find the back of the net, resulting in a goalless score line at the end of regular time.

With the score remaining deadlocked, the match entered extra time. As the game headed into the first half of extra time, Dhasa United’s substitute, jersey number 30, Tenzin Choeying, seized a golden opportunity. A cross from jersey number 27, Tsultrim Dawa, was met with an impeccable right-footed volley, propelling the ball into the back of the net. The electrifying goal sent shockwaves through the Dhondupling FC defence line, giving Dhasa United a crucial advantage.

Dhasa United continued to press forward and they doubled their advantage with a remarkable display of teamwork in the second half of the extra time. Jersey number 10, Tenzin Tsering, leapt above the opposition’s defence, executing a precise header from a long throw-in.

However, Dhondupling FC showed character and in the dying moments of the game, they were awarded a penalty, presenting a glimmer of hope. Forward player Tenzin Choedak, confidently stepped up to the spot and converted the penalty, reducing the deficit to 2-1. Despite their late resurgence, time ran out for Dhondupling FC, and the final whistle confirmed Dhasa United as the champions of the 28th GCMGC.

Both teams were penalized with yellow cards but Dhasa United was reduced to ten men when winger Tsultrim Dawa received a red card towards the end of the match. Dhasa United’s victory in the 28th GCMG Cup marks a significant milestone for the club, as they defeated six-time champions, Dhondupling FC.

Dhasa United’s journey began with a thrilling 4-1 victory over Dekyiling Sports Club, followed by a goalless draw against Ladakh Sonamling FC. They secured their place in the knockout stage by defeating Samyeling Delhi FC 2-1 and finishing atop Group B. In the quarter-finals, they overcame the mighty Bhoepa United from Europe, and in the semi-finals, they triumphed over Team Taktser from Nepal with a calm and collected penalty from Tsultrim Dawa and a superb team move finished by Tenzin Choeying.

On the other hand, Dhondupling FC began their campaign with a 2-1 victory against Snowlion Gangtok FC, followed by a dominant 3-0 win against Team Nepal, with a stunning hat-trick from Tenzin Choesang. Despite a narrow defeat to Bhoepa United, they finished atop Group D. In the quarter-finals, they triumphed over city rivals Dekyiling SC in the Doon derby, and in the semi-finals, a superb volley from super-sub Tenzin Choedak secured their place in the final with a victory over Poanta Cholsum FC.

Tenzin Tsering, wearing jersey number 10 for Dhasa United, was named the Player of the Tournament for his exceptional performances throughout the competition. Tenzin Rabgar of Dhondupling FC earned the Best Goalkeeper award for his outstanding displays between the posts. Meanwhile, Tenzin Lhakpa of TIPA FC claimed the Top Scorer award, having netted an impressive nine goals in the tournament. TCV United was awarded the Fair Play award for their commendable conduct throughout the tournament.

As the final whistle blew, Dhasa United’s players and fans erupted into scenes of pure jubilation, while Dhondupling FC players were left to reflect on a hard-fought battle that slipped from their grasp. The 28th edition of the GCMG Cup will be remembered as a thrilling and unforgettable tournament, with Dhasa United etching their name in Tibetan football history as deserving champions.
