DHARAMSHALA, May 1: The Tibetan leadership has expressed profound condolences to U.S. Congressman Jim McGovern and his family following the untimely demise of his daughter, Molly McGovern, who passed away at the age of 23 after a brief battle with a rare form of cancer.

In a letter dated April 25, President Penpa Tsering, the democratically elected head of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), conveyed his deepest sympathies and paid tribute to Molly’s remarkable strength and spirit. “Molly’s extraordinary bravery in confronting her rare cancer diagnosis is truly inspiring,” Sikyong wrote. “The fact that she continued to embrace life so fully in spite of battling a rare diagnosis speaks to a grace and resilience that few possess. Such profound courage in the face of adversity is a testament to her exceptional character and will forever remain an inspiration.”

Invoking Tibetan Buddhist belief in the continuity of consciousness, the head of the exile polity added, “May you find solace in knowing that Molly’s beautiful spirit lives on, and that the love she shared and the joy she brought to others will never fade.” He concluded his letter by extending prayers and solidarity on behalf of the CTA and the global Tibetan community, stating, “While no words can ease your pain, please accept our sincere sympathies and know that the entire Tibetan community mourns alongside you.”

Speaker Khenpo Sonam Tenphel of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile also issued a condolence message to Congressman McGovern, offering heartfelt sympathy on behalf of the 17th TPiE and Tibetans worldwide. “We are deeply saddened to hear of the demise of your beloved daughter, Molly McGovern,” the Speaker wrote. “Molly was a beacon of joy, bringing light not only to your life but to all who knew her. Her quiet strength and unwavering courage in the face of illness were truly inspiring. In this hour of grief, we stand in solidarity with you and your family.”

The Speaker concluded by offering prayers for Molly’s soul and strength to the grieving family, saying, “May the Almighty give you strength to bear this great loss.”

Congressman McGovern has been a longstanding friend and advocate for the Tibetan cause, including his sponsorship and leadership in passage of important bills related to Tibet in the US Congress. The messages of condolence reflect the deep respect and appreciation the Tibetan people hold for him and his family.
