Dalai Lama congratulates Germany’s new Chancellor Friedrich Merz

DHARAMSHALA, May 7: Tibetan leader His Holiness The Dalai Lama has extended his congratulations to Friedrich Merz on his election as Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, expressing optimism about the new leader’s ability to navigate current global challenges.

In a statement, the octogenarian Tibetan spiritual leader reflected on his longstanding connection with Germany, noting that he has “felt a special affinity for the people of Germany” since childhood. The Dalai Lama acknowledged the support that Germans have shown for “the Tibetan people’s nonviolent struggle to achieve freedom and dignity” throughout his many visits to the country.

The letter also highlighted His Holiness’s appreciation for German interest in his efforts to promote compassion, human unity, and inter-religious harmony.

Addressing the complex international landscape, the Dalai Lama expressed confidence in Merz’s leadership capabilities: “Today, the world is facing many challenges. I am confident that you will provide able leadership through these difficult times.”

His Holiness also took the opportunity to praise the European Union’s collaborative approach, describing its emphasis on “the greater collective interest and welfare of all its members” as an inspiration that could contribute to “greater peace and prosperity in the world”.

The message concluded with the Dalai Lama wishing Chancellor Merz success in fulfilling the aspirations of the German people and contributing toward creating “a more compassionate, peaceful world”.
