DHARMASHALA, Feb. 7: Exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness has donated an unspecified sum to rescue and relief efforts, while expressing his sadness for the loss of life and destruction of property due to the massive earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.
On Tuesday, in a letter written to the Executive Director of the World Food Programme, the octogenarian Tibetan leader stated, “I offer my condolences to those families who have lost loved ones and pray for all those affected by this tragedy.”
“At the same time, it is heartening to know that in addition to the UN coordinated health teams, NGOs and many countries from around the world are sending support to help the rescue and relief efforts in the quake zones.”
On 6 February 2023, a powerful and deadly earthquake measuring 7.8 on Richter scale struck southern and central Turkey and north-western Syria. It is one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in Turkish and Syrian history.
The death toll as of Tuesday night soared past 6300 and is expected to rise as rescue workers dig through the rubble despite difficult conditions. Thousands are injured while those that escaped injury or death have taken refuge in government shelters.
