DHARAMSHALA, May 14: The Department of Security of the Central Tibetan Administration, which shoulders the primary responsibility of ensuring the security of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, has said that the security of the Tibetan leader will be reviewed shortly.
“Security threat from China is not a new phenomenon,” Ngodup Dorjee, secretary of the Department said while exclusively speaking to Phayul. “We continue to remain attentive and alert.”
The Secretary said that the security of the Dalai Lama will be reviewed shortly while adding that his department has approached the Indian government on upgrading the security apparatus around the Dalai Lama with latest technology and security equipments.
“We have already asked the Indian government for equipments to detect harmful chemicals,” Dorjee told Phayul.
The 76-year old Tibetan leader’s security is reviewed every three years on a routine basis.
The Dalai Lama, who is currently on a five-nation European tour, in a recent interview revealed he was passed warnings alerting him of a plot to kill him.
“We received some sort of information from Tibet,” the Dalai Lama said.
“Some Chinese agents training some Tibetans, especially women, you see, using poison – the hair poisoned, and the scarf poisoned – they were supposed to seek blessing from me, and my hand touch.”
The Chinese state-run media earlier this week denied the charges saying that if Beijing wanted to eliminate the Dalai Lama, they could have done it earlier.
“If the central government wanted to eliminate the Dalai Lama, why has it waited for such a long time?” state-run Global Times remarked.
Indian news paper, Hindustan Times yesterday reported that the Indian government has also taken serious note of the threat to the Dalai Lama.
“After the Dalai Lama went public on the Chinese threat to his life, New Delhi has quietly undertaken a security review and asked the Tibetan government-in-exile to upgrade the security of His Holiness, with concurrent instructions to the Himachal police,” the news paper said.
Earlier this year, police in the Indian commercial capital of Mumbai reported of receiving intelligence inputs warning that the Dalai Lama may be harmed by six Chinese nationals who were likely to sneak into India.
