The Mayor of Minneapolis, Mr. R.T. Rybak made history when he officially signed a Proclamation declaring March 12, 2011, as Tibetan Women’s Uprising Day. This is the first official Proclamation received by a Regional branch of the Tibetan Women’s Association in the United States.
This year’s 52nd commemoration of March 12 was held in Downtown Minneapolis, the cultural hub of Minnesota. The commemoration was well attended despite the bone-chilling wind and freezing temperatures well known to Minnesotans.
One of the speakers, North American Chithue candidate Dicki Chhoyang la stated that Tibetan politics have generally been male dominated and pointed out that their success has been cemented with the crucial support of their respective wives, sisters and daughters.
She also highlighted the fact that many of the landmark achievements and fame garnered by Tibetans in the world community have been acquired by Tibetan women-notably, world renowned political writer/blogger Woeser.
This is the second Proclamation issued by Mayor of Minneapolis, Mr. R.T. Rybak this year, the first being March 10, 2011, as Tibet Day.
The Regional Tibetan Women’s Association of Minnesota intends to make this an annual initiative and is looking to garner future March 12 Proclamations from various other cities in the great state of Minnesota.
