Dharamsala, March 23: Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen of Denmark hopes to meet the exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama in May when he visits the country, despite Chinese warnings, AFP cited a parliamentary source as saying in a report last week.
“I met with the Dalai Lama during his last visit to Denmark in 2003 and I plan to do so again if possible,” Rasmussen wrote in response to a question from opposition Socialist People’s Party member Pernille Frahm, who passed on his answer to AFP.
Frahm said she had written to the prime minister to ask if he “planned to defy warnings from the Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and meet with the Dalai Lama in May.”
The 73-year-old Tibetan leader and winner of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize has visited Denmark several times, each time provoking loud protests from China, which has ruled Tibet since sending in troops to invade the region in late 1949.
Exiled Tibetan leader’s next visit to the Scandinavian country is scheduled for 29-31 May.
During the visit the Dalai Lama is expected to give Buddhist teachings on “Mindfulness Based on Love and Compassion” through Nagarjuna’s Commentary on Bodhicitta (Jangchup Semdrel) and Kamalashila’s The Middling Stages of Meditation (Gomrim Barpa) at the Bella Center in the Danish capital city Copenhagen.
His Holiness will later give a public lecture on the subject: “Peace through Inner Peace” on Sunday, 31st of May.
