New Delhi, Feb. 6 – The largest pro independence group of the exile Tibetan community carried out a protest demonstration here yesterday to condemn the launch of “Strike Hard” campaign in Lhasa starting January 18 with around a hundred Tibetans arrested so far.
More than a hundred members of the Regional Tibetan Youth congress of Budh Vihar, Samyeling Tibetan colony, Majnu ka Tila, and Rohini carried out a peaceful protest rally from Jantar Mantar to Parliament Street.
Addressing the rally, Tsultrium Dorjee, Information Secretary of TYC, demanded that the Chinese Government follow international norms in dealing with political prisoners. He said that China must call off the “strike Hard’ and the “Patriotic Re-education” campaigns in Tibet with immediate effect.
TYC activists set ablaze an effigy of Chinese President Hu Jintao and Chinese national flag. A 5-minute silence was observed to mourn the death of Pema Tsepak, a 24-year-old Tibetan from Chamdo who succumbed to injuries sustained during beatings in prison on January 23.
Later in the day, the TYC activists staged a protest outside the United Nation Information Centre in New Delhi asking the United Nations to pressure China to withdraw the “Strike Hard” Campaign. TYC executive Tenzing Norsang and Tsultrium Dorjee were called inside the UN information office where they met Rajiv Chandran, National Information officer of United Nation, and presented a memorandum for the UN General Secretary Ban Ki Moon.
TYC also submitted a Memorandum to all the embassies in the Indian capital to appeal for their support to Tibetan independence and withdrawal of “Strike Hard” campaign.
