Dharamsala, Jan. 22 – The members of the 14th Tibetan parliament in exile will now be allocated regions inhabited by Tibetans in different parts of the world. The allocation will be based on the population and other regional factors.
A proposal for resolution was tabled in 2003, and a resolution was passed thereafter but implementation got delayed.
The members of Tibetan parliament will virtually be allocated constituencies for the MPs to have better coverage of the scattered Tibetan diaspora. The constituencies, however, will not be contested for elections which is contested from the three traditional provinces and religious traditions.
The members of the Tibetan parliament are elected with the three traditional provinces of Tibet having 10 seats each, and the 4 religious traditions and Bon tradition having 2 seats each, 2 for Europe and 1 for North America. 3 members are appointed directly by the Dalai Lama; however, the current Tibetan parliament has only 43 members, as the Dalai Lama did not appoint anyone for the 14th parliament.
Some Tibetan inhabited areas have more than one member of Tibetan parliament residing there while others have none.
The MPs will work in coordination with the 38 local Tibetan parliaments.
