Cambridge, MA – A group of local Tibetans and friends gathered last evening in Harvard Square to offer prayers for the victims of the terror attacks in Mumbai, India.

Chanting prayers , one of which was Om Mani Padme Hum, a mantra that literally translates as jewel in the lotus, the group stood in a semi-circle around a cluster of candles and incense.

“You must be wondering why we are here,” explained Tsepa Bayul, one of the vigil organizers and a student at Northeastern University. “We have strong ties to India. We are Tibetans.” He referred to the the generosity of the Indian government and the Indian people who welcomed the Tibetan refugees when China invaded Tibet in 1959.

With more than 100,000 Tibetans, India has the second largest population of Tibetans outside of Tibet.

Cambridge was one of various cities around the world that has shown support to the victims and their family and friends in Mumbai, India.

“We are one family,” summed up Ngawang Jorden of the Tibetan Community of Boston.

Since March 15, Tibetans and friends have gathered every Wednesday evening to encourage local residents and visitors to learn about the Tibetan struggle and to take actions for a peaceful resolution on Tibet.
