Chain Hunger Strike in Italy for Tibet

Italy, March 23 – An initiative to show solidarity with Tibet started in Naples with the fasting by Luciano Stella, Tony Quattrone, and Gaetano dello Jacono.

An appeal formulated over the past few days requested the Chinese government to stop all types of violence and repression in Tibet and that it immediately re-establishes all communication systems that have been interrupted.

The appeal also requested that Prime Minister Prodi and Foreign Minister D’Alema should take concrete action to ensure that the UN Security Council asks the Beijing government to authorize the entry into Lhasa and in Tibet of an international team of observers”.

Starting Easter Sunday the chain hunger strike has already obtained the participation of over 90 Neapolitan politicians, artists, intellectuals, and ordinary citizens. Three Neapolitans will take part every 24 hours to support the Tibetan people. The chain will continue for at least 30 days. The President of the city councilpersons, Mr. Leonardo Impegno will also fast for 24 hours as part of the chain hunger strike.

The promoter of the pro-Tibet chain hunger strike, film producer Mr Luciano Stella presented the mayor of Naples, Mrs. Rosa Russo Iervolino, with a Tibetan flag which is now flying on the main balcony of the city hall. 500 flags are being produced for distribution next week. The flags will be placed on balconies throughout the city.
