Dharamshala: The Tibet Album–a website hosting British photography in central Tibet between 1920 to 1950, was showcased here yesterday at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives (LTWA).
The website features photographs captured by the British representatives and missions in Tibet, including those of Charles Bell, Arthur Hopkinson, Evan Nepean, Hugh Richardson, Fredrick Spencer Chapman, Herry Staunton and others.
The exhibition was a joint initiation of the LTWA and the Amnye Machen Institute.
The website is a collaborative project between the Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford, and the British Museum, London, and is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council of the United Kingdom.
This website provides access to 6000 historic photographs spanning 30 years of Tibet’s history.
Speaking to Tibetonline TV, Dr. Clair Harris, curator of the Pitt Rivers Museum, said that “the Tibetan response on this online photography has been overwhelming.”
Ms. Harris, who has been associated with research on Tibet for the last two decades, expressed her hope that the website, http://tibet.prm.ox.ac.uk, will benefit Tibetans both in and outside Tibet.
Some 300 (of the total 6,000) photos are furnished with extended captions, of which some 80 biographical entries have been sourced from British government documents.
