August 30 – The Casurina Hall of India Habitat Centre was packed with nearly 200 people ─ students, professionals, journalists and socially conscious elderly citizens eagerly coming together at a Tibetan evening called “Why Tibet” on 28th August.

This unusual mix was silently listening to four speakers- two political activists, a professor and a filmmaker.

Tenzin Tsundue, Tenzin Choeying, Dr. Honey Oberoi and Mr. Suresh Jindal were the speakers. Tsundue opened the session with introducing Tibet, its relations to China, India’s interests in the issue. Dr. Oberoi described the complex relations, which Tibetans in India shared with Indians. She talked about the significance of the struggle, the principle of non-violence, which it follows and hinted at its future. Tenzin Choeying talked about the students and their leadership and the student movements around the world concerning Tibet.

Mr. Suresh Jindal aptly introduced and concluded the talks. The floor was thrown open to questions, which were slow to start but by the time the session ended, many hands were raised.

Essentially, the meet drew people to the human struggle, which Tibet encapsulates. It covered the want to go back to Tibet, China as an enemy without a face, the ecological damage incurred by the ‘roof of the world’, the recent express train to Lhasa, the fact that His Holiness the Dalai Lama being the only face of Tibet.

The session ended with showing the film “Conflicts”, a BBC documentary which covers the Chinese aggression, the human rights violation and the history of political struggle in the area from the two sides of the story – one from the Chinese and the other from Tibetans.
