Karmapa Birthday Celebration in Nepal

Kathmandu, 26 June : The 21st birthday of His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Urgen Drodrul Trinley Dorji was celebrated today at Dasang Rinpoche Monastery in Boudha, Kathmandu amidst a crowd of over 2000 people including Tibetans and Himalayan region ethnic people like Sherpas, Tamangs, Gurungs, Nyeshangs, Yolmos etc. This year’s celebration was grander than previous years with more people participating and more cultural activities.

The celebration started with circumambulation of His Holiness Karmapa’s photo around the holy stupa of Boudanath. The students of Mangaldeep School led the national anthem of Nepal and Tibet followed by singi (Snow Lion) dance by Benchen Phuntsok Dargeyling Monastery. The secretary of the Nepal Karmapa Service Association addressed the gathering and told about the importance of the celebration and activities of the Association. Mr. Lhundup Dorji, Manager of the Tibetan Refugee Transit Center and Welfare Officer also addressed the gathering and said, “it is a great day for us that we could celebrate the birthday of His Holiness the Karmapa in a grand way, but we should not just celebrate His birthday but also follow His advices closely”.

Many artistes, dance troupes and students performed at the function. Singer Karma Yeshi performed three songs; one called ‘Karmapa Khenno’ from his famed album ‘Khenno’. Out of many performers, monk Tashi was outstanding with his performance of two songs, the crowd really loved it and applauded his performance.

The Organizers provided free refreshment and vegetarian food for people. Nepal Karmapa Service Association organized the celebration. There are a large number of Himalayan region people of Nepal following His Holiness Karmapa; they had earlier helped Him escape to India.
