Dharamshala May 30 – An unusual stalemate of sorts has gripped the Assembly of the Tibetan People’s Deputies as the 43 Tibetan legislators met to elect the Chairperson of the Tibetan parliament.

Deputy Karma Choephel, Deputy Penpa Tsering and Deputy Thupten Phelgye were the three nominees chosen by the members through a preliminary voting. However, Deputy Karma Choephel and Deputy Penpa Tsering got 21 votes each thus tying the result. A blank vote caused the standoff in the votings.

Again a voting was done with the two leading nominees but produced a tie. The Election Commissioner said that there shall be voting again. After the second voting, a tie was produced again.

The session which was adjourned till 7PM will meet again to vote.

The assembly which earlier had 46 members now has 43 members and a tie is unlikely.
