BEIJING, August 16 – China plans to build one of the world’s highest airports in mountainous Tibet, state media said today.

The airport in Ngari prefecture near Tibet’s border with Jammu and Kashmir will be only the third in the Himalayan region once it is completed, Xinhua news agency quoted Yan Shijin, deputy director of Tibet’s development and reform commission, as saying.

It will be located 14,300 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest airports in the world, according to the agency.

There are just two airports in Tibet at present, one near the capital Lhasa and the other in Qamdo prefecture.
