While Prime Minister John Howard honours him by giving him the privilege of addressing the Australian parliament on Friday, the dark side of the Chinese President Hu Jintao should never be forgotten.

It was his successful role in holding the reins of the totalitarian power of the Chinese communist regime that saw him ascend to the highest rank in the country.

From 1988-92, Hu was party secretary of the Tibet Autonomous Region. With his declaration of martial law and policy of merciless repression, thousands of Tibetans were tortured, imprisoned and killed for expressing their political, religous and cultural rights. Hu virtually brought a second wave of cultural revolution to Tibet.

Today, Tibet’s unique race, language and culture is on the brink of extinction. Hence, we urge the Government to engage Hu in a dialogue with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his representatives on the future of Tibet.
