Dharamsala, August 13 – The Tibetan Welfare Office, Kullu Region, led a relief operation to help the victims of the recent flashflood at Kangni Nallah. Regional chapters of Tibetan Youth Congress and Tibetan Women’s Association also took part in this benevolent programme.
The Deputy Commissioner, Sub Divisional Magistrate and Border road Organisation have expressed gratitude on the local people’s behalf to the Tibetans for their timely help.
The Kullu Tibetan Welfare Officer believes that the relief work has helped improve relation with the Indians.
Hundreds of people have been reportedly killed and many others injured in a flashflood on August 7. All the victims were labourers stationed there for road construction. Earlier, many workers had died in a major cloudburst in Solan Nallah near Manikaran on July 17 this year. However, the floods did not effect the Tibetan settlers in the region.
The Tibetan relief workers collected clothes and daily requirements from various Tibetan communities in the region. According to the Welfare Office, the collections were very satisfactory. “We collected about a truck full of clothes and Rupees 16000 in cash”, Mr. Lobsang Chojor, the Welfare Officer said.
The 18 families worst effected by the flood were given special care by the Tibetan relief workers. The 130 survivors were given temporary shelter at a school in Manali where the Deputy Commissioner and Sub Divisional Magistrate presented the relief packages on behalf of the Tibetans.
The Tibetans have earlier participated in relief works elsewhere in India. The Central Tibetan Administration led a relief programme in the quake-effected areas of Gujarat in 2001.
