A Rochester church promotes peace and unity through an ancient art.

It is called Mandala painting.

Tibetan monks use colored sand funneled through a metal tube to create an image.

Christ Church Unity in Rochester invited the monks to create a mandala for visitors to their church.

Reverend Elizabeth Haugen of Christ Church Unity says, “We really want them to learn to be at peace and harmony and the peace they get when you’re willing to commit to something as delicate and beautiful as this.”

The monks spent about 20 hours on this mandala.

It didn’t last that long though.

After they finish they take each mandala apart and throw the sand in the river.

That’s part of the tradition.
