Since the Chinese first occupied Tibet in 1951, social activists around the world have been petitioning the world’s leaders to pressure China into freeing the tiny Asian country high in the Himalayas.

The country’s Buddhists are still suffering through the occupation, but you can bring light to their homes and lives by running in the Light Up the World Two-person Trail Relay Race at Nose Hill Park on Shaganappi Trail and Edgemont Boulevard N.W. Saturday at 9 a.m.

For each $90 team entry, the international foundation Light Up the World will provide a home in Tibet with a long-life light bulb and a rechargeable battery powered by a village-owned generator.

The relay course will include a 5-K loop up and down Nose Hill for the first runner, and a wider 10-K loop around Nose Hill for the second runner. There will also be a free one-kilometre kid’s fun run at 8:30 a.m.

Two-time Mount Everest summiteer Dave Rodney will emcee the race, and Tibetan music, dancing and food will be supplied to runners afterward.

Registrations must be made at Gord’s Running Store by Friday evening. Call 547-3233 for more details.
