Tibetans access new window on world with Alcatel DSL
Paris, July 2 – Alcatel, the world leader in broadband access solutions, has partnered with China Netcom to successfully introduce digital subscriber line (DSL) broadband solutions in Lhasa, the capital of the Tibetan autonomous region in China. The deployment was carried out by Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Alcatel’s flagship Chinese company and the leading Chinese telecom technology vendor.
With this introduction, Tibetans are able to connect with the rest of the world through high-speed broadband access services. By offering access to high-speed web surfing, e-education, interactive games, video on demand, teleconferencing and other services, Alcatel’s world-class broadband solution will impact the education and lives of Tibetans and enhance the ability of its citizens to compete in the information age.
“We chose Alcatel Shanghai Bell because its DSL solutions are world-advanced, scalable, reliable and cost-effective, “said Mao Xiaojie, the leader of China Netcom Tibet Branch, “With DSL deployment, we are able to provide high quality broadband services to residents in Lhasa.”

This contract further reinforces Alcatel’s leadership in the global DSL market, of which Alcatel holds 37.7 percent based on May 2003 data from industry analyst Dell’Oro Group. To date, Alcatel has shipped more than 26 million lines and its broadband access solutions are prominent in the networks of over 70 of the world’s largest carriers.
