Beijing, June 18 – The Tibetan government has hiked admission fee to 27 major tourist destinations, including the world famous Potala Palace of the Dalai Lama, in the remote Himalayan region.

Admission fees at the tourist spots increased after the rates prevalent were found to be relatively low when compared to entry tickets to similar state-level cultural sites elsewhere in the country, Xinhua news agency reported from the Tibetan capital Lhasa.

Most of the cultural sites that have seen a hike in admission fees are temples, it said. Tourists will now have to shell out 100 yuan ($ 12) per person to visit the Potala Palace.

The Potala Palace, a world-renowned temple and the largest building in Tibet, collected over 10 million yuan in ticket sales in 2002.
