In a phone call to Australia’s acting foreign minister Mark Vaile, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing said the military was preparing to provide emergency assistance.

But Li warned it would not be an easy task given the treacherous terrain on the world’s sixth highest mountain, Tibet’s Cho Oyu.

A trio of Australian police officers remain on the peak after a climbing partner died while in training to tackle Mount Everest next year.

Police in Australia’s Victoria state said details surrounding the death of Paul Carr remained unclear but it was believed he became ill on the 8,201-metre mountain and died sometime around May 15.
