The Second International Congress on Tibetan Medicine, Practicing the Art of the Medicine Buddha in the West: from Tradition to Evidence, Research and Practical Applications (ICTM-2) will take place November 5 – 8, 2003 at the Hyatt Regency in Washington DC, USA.

The First International Congress on Tibetan Medicine: Revealing the Art of the Medicine Buddha (November 7 – 9, 1998 – Washington DC, USA) was the first major international conference on Tibetan medicine in the west and provided an introduction to the many varied elements of Tibetan medicine: historical, geographical and environmental issues; research, translation and epistemological aspects; a survey of the different modalities and practices, as well as modern applications in western medicine. The conference brought together Tibetan doctors and lamas from around the globe in a spectacular celebration of Tibetan medicine, and was attended by over 2000 people.

ICTM-2 will provide an opportunity to reconvene and assess the developments that have taken place since the 1998 conference, to update information and data, to strengthen networks, and most importantly, to share and exchange lessons learned. The conference will focus primarily on emerging themes that directly affect the application and practice of Tibetan medicine in the west. Key themes of ICTM-2 include:

·Highlights and potential contributions of Tibetan medicine and Buddhism to western medical practice

·Recent developments in Buddhism and health, mind/body, meditation and neuroscience research

·Latest advances in clinical research

·Issues of integration of Tibetan medicine into current clinical practice

·The future and sustainability of Tibetan medicine in the west, with a special focus on education, legislation, IPR and on conservation initiatives of Tibetan medicinal products.
