Nobel laureate Dalai Lama blesses a child during a meeting with Tibetan refugees in Guwahati on Monday.

The Tibetan spiritual head, in the city on his way to the Tawang monastery in Arunachal Pradesh, said insurgent groups in the Northeast should seek solution to their problems through democratic means.

He said democracy in India is deep-rooted enough to addres their problems. On self-rule of the Tibetan people, the Dalai Lama said a direct contact has been established with the Chinese government and he was hopeful of a mutually-agreed solution.

He also appreciated the Chinese government’s efforts in taking up development activities in three provinces of Tibet.

He also opined that the traditional practice of selecting spiritual and political heads through ‘incarnation’ could be done away with if the people of Tibet so desired.
