WILLIAMSTOWN – An exhibition focusing on the art and culture of Tibet opens Saturday at the Williams College Museum of Art.

The show, “Tibet: Mountains and Valleys, Castles and Tents,” runs through Aug. 3 and features selections from the Newark Museum’s collection of Tibetan art. Included are examples of official regalia, noble jewelry, castle furnishings, horse gear and weapons.

The show also includes rare photographs of Tibet taken by some of its earliest Western visitors.

The exhibit is one of two major events this winter and spring focusing on the culture of Tibet at WCMA.

Beginning April 15 and continuing through May 3, two monks from Namgyal Monastery will be at WCMA laying millions of grains of sand into place on a flat platform in the museum’s rotunda.

The monks will be creating a mandala — a tool for consecrating the earth and its inhabitants — in an event entitled “Sacred Art of Tibet: Making a Mandala.”
