On April 29th, 2006, the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress of NY & NJ held a mass prayer meeting at Tibet House, NY in honor of the late Pawo Thupten Ngodup and many other martyrs who had laid down their precious lives for Tibet’s freedom. The President of RTYC of NY & NJ briefed the attendees about the significance of this event and was then followed by the evening prayer beginning with offering of ritual cakes (Soen-Zsok). Attendees numbering about 50 followed the chants led by the sanghas and offered their respect and prayers to all martyrs including Pawo Thupten Ngodup.
Pawo Thupten Ngodup was one of the hunger strikers, who self-immolated on April 27, 1998 in Delhi aimed at expressing his despair on the issue of Tibet’s freedom. In other words, he used his body as a lamp in order to draw the attention of the world community towards the injustice done by the Chinese government to a peace loving nation (Tibet). This was the day to remember and pay our heartfelt tribute to this brave soul and many other unsung martyrs in Tibet who had sacrificed their precious lives for the cause of Tibet.
