DHARAMSHALA, July 4:British singer and actor Jane Birkin, has become the latest in the list of artists and singers to bear the brunt of Chinese fury for their comments on human rights situation in China, association with the Dalai Lama or with the Tibetan cause.
Birkin, who was scheduled to perform in Shanghai on July 9, was denied a Chinese visa. According to an associate, it was her ‘commitment to fighting human rights abuses’, which led to the cancellation.
However, the authorities have given no explanation for denying the visa despite granting the visas to her entourage.
The France-based singer, who had taken part in demonstrations in support of Tibet, is also a member of Amnesty International and the International Human Rights Federation.
The 69-year old singer currently on her world tour ‘Gainsbourg Symphonic’, which started off in Montreal last month to mark the 25th years since the death of iconic French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg.
She originally planned to join the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra as a part of her tour.
