BEIJING – China said Monday it “regretted” a convention of Tibet support movements in the Czech capital of Prague, saying no diplomatic ally should offer a venue for the exiled Dalai Lama.

The Czech government has reassured Beijing it considers Tibet part of China and that no Czech government leader will attend the conference, the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement.

“We approve of this, but at the same time we express regret that this meeting is being held in the Czech republic,” the ministry said.

The fourth International Conference of Tibet Support Groups, attended by hundreds of activists from more than 40 countries, opened in Prague on Sunday with remarks delivered by the Dalai Lama. Even before the meeting, the Chinese government made “representations” to the Czech government, the foreign ministry said in its statement. “We are against any country with diplomatic ties with China providing the venue or the facilities for the Dalai clique to engage in activities aimed at splitting the motherland,” it said.
