THE council will foot the £16,500 bill for the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama’s visit to the Capital.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner is to visit Edinburgh in June next year.
A number of events in the city have been organised for the visit by the Edinburgh Interfaith Association and the Edinburgh International Centre for World Spiritualities. Edinburgh City Council says the funding is needed to meet costs for travel, security, venues and promotion.
The Dalai Lama will pay a visit to the Scottish Parliament, where he will give “time and reflection” and meet MSPs.
The 66-year-old political exile will also hold a major peace event at the Usher Hall on his “Vision of a New Civilisation”, where schoolchildren will be able to ask him questions.
It will be the third time the Dalai Lama has visited Scotland, but his commitments will ensure it is his most high-profile visit to date.
