Showcase of Award Winning International Films from India, Nepal, France and England
The Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota is sponsoring the third Tibetan Film Festival, March 5-11, 2004. Co-Sponsored by Minnesota Film Arts, the festival will take place at the Bell Auditorium, at 17th Ave. and University Ave. SE on the campus of the University of Minnesota. For the schedule and film descriptions, visit www.midwestmtn.com/tafm
The festival will include award winning feature films and documentaries dealing with the history and culture of Tibet, Tibetan Medicine, Tibetan Women’s Issues, and films about His Holiness The Dalai Lama, who visited the Twin Cities in 2001.
The festival will have some special elements. Roslyn Dauber, director of two of the films, will be in town for the opening reception and to answer questions following the screening of her two films, “Tara’s Daughters” and “Menri Monastery”. Following the showing of two documentaries about traditional Tibetan medicine practioners, there will be a discussion of Tibetan medicine with Dr. Tashi Lhamo (traditional Tibetan doctor), Tsewang Ngodup, M.D., and Miriam Cameron, Ph.D., who is on the faculty of the Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota.
The festival will open with two Midwest premiers. “Dreaming of Tibet” explores the cultural challenges faced by Tibetans living in exile. The film is narrated by Peter Coyote and includes appearances by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, actors Richard Gere and Goldie Hawn and author/climber Jon Krakauer. A documentary called “Nomad’s Land” by Alex Gabbay, addresses the issues of identity faced by a man, born a nomad in Tibet, who now lives in London and works as an actor and model. A gala reception will follow the films with Tibetan performances and special guests.
The Minnesota Tibetan community, which had its beginning in 1992, is now the second largest in the United States. The community is committed to creating a vibrant Tibetan cultural presence in the Twin Cities and to share it with all Minnesotans. The Tibetan Film Festival is part of this effort.
