A severely overloaded bus plunged into a valley in Tibet, killing 14 passengers and injuring 43, the official Xinhua News Agency reported today.

The bus was carrying 64 people including two drivers – 20 people over its capacity – when it crashed early yesterday, the report said.

It was travelling south from the Tibetan capital of Lhasa when it plunged into a 30-metre valley in Tibet’s Nyemo County.

Ten people died at the scene and four died at hospitals later in the day, Xinhua said. Of the 43 injured, six were seriously hurt, the report said.

Most of the passengers were farmers and herders from Tibet and neighbouring Qinghai and Sichuan provinces, the report said.
