The 2006 Toronto Asian Soccer Tournament will again see Team Tibet making its mark among a host of teams representing China, Japan, Korea, Sri Lanka, Burma, Pakistan and Laos.
Players for the Tibet team which calls itself “young Tibetan Lions” are all young high-schoolers under 21 years of age which might influence the team’s performance in some way as the tournament is a “men’s tournament” but the boys most of whom belongs to immigrant Tibetan families from India are confident that they will do well. MOre than winning the Cup, the Tibetan Lions believe it is a dream and a great honour to be able to represent their country against other teams.
It’s been 3 years since Team Tibet has been competing in the multicultural tournament without making it to the finals. But the team considers its best result so far to be its debut appearance when it captured 3rd place by knocking out a superior Mainland China Team A.
The current Group B match will prove to be a challenging one for the team as Burma is favoured. The team’s first match on June 24 will be against Pakistan on Field 7 at 9am and the second match at 11am against Burma on field 6.The venue of the match is Esther Shriner Stadium on Bathurst Street. Tibetans and supporters are encouraged to join the team on the Tibet Team bus that leaves from Parkdale Collegiate basketball court on Jameson Ave at 7:30am on June 24.
