19 Tibetan students awarded merit scholarship in 12th CBSE exam

DHARAMSHALA, July 14: 19 Tibetan students; 12 girls and 7 boys, scored 95% and above in the 2020 CBSE 12th examination results declared on Monday. The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), also known as the exile government, said that 19 students are to be awarded with the Sikyong scholarship which grants 1 Lakh rupees each recipient.

Among the merit holders 14 are from Tibetan Homes School in Mussoorie, 2 from Sambhota Tibetan school in Mundgod and one each from TCV Selakui, TCV Suja, and CST Herbertpur.

An all-time record has been set as 91 students scored above 90% in the academic year 2019-2020. The press statement declared that a total number of 1016 students from 16 Tibetan schools appeared in the CBSE examination held in March out of whom 998 cleared the examinations with a pass percentage of 98.23% overall. Class 12 batches from 10 schools have passed in all the respective subjects.

Since the inception of the Sikyong scholarship in 2013, the number of recipients for the award surged to 19 for the first time this year. The list of awardees spanned all three streams; 14 students from Arts, 4 from Science, and 1 from Commerce. Tenzin Chokyi became the first recipient of the scholarship award scoring 95.4% in 2013. Moreover, the Gaden Phodrang Merit award was announced for 9 students, 3 from each stream, which grants rupees 20,000, 15,000 and 10,000 to the three position-holders respectively.

The CTA President Lobsang Sangay and minister for education Pema Yangchen commended the students for this “historic milestone” and congratulated the teachers, staff, students, and parents involved in this achievement. The minister pointed out that girls have outperformed the boys in the results this year.
