Office of Tibet, New York — His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the spiritual and temporal leader of the Tibetan people, will visit five cities in the United States from September 5 to 24, 2003, at which time He will offer lectures in Buddhist philosophy and universal responsibility, participate in a scientific conference, and take part in an interfaith event to observe the anniversary of the September 11 tragedy. He will also give the inaugural address at the First Conference of Tibetan Buddhist Dharma Centers of the Americas.
Commencing His visit from San Francisco, California (September 4-6), His Holiness will receive an Honorary Doctoral Degree from the University of San Francisco on September 5, following which He will offer a public address to the University community. From Bloomington, His Holiness will visit Washington, DC from September 8 to 11, to participate in an interfaith event being organized by the Washington National Cathedral to observe the anniversary of September 11. His Holiness will also bestow the International Campaign for Tibet’s Light of Truth awards for 2003. His Holiness will be in Boston, Massachusetts from September 12-15, where He will join a group of scientists and academics in a two-day Mind and Life Conference at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition, His Holiness will spend one day meeting with Scholars at Harvard University, followed by an address to the Harvard community. His Holiness will also offer an address to the general public, entitled “The Global Community and the Need for Universal Responsibility” at the Fleet Center on September 14. From September 16 to 24, His Holiness will be in New York, NY to give a public teaching, entitled “Training the Mind, Opening the Heart.” This event will be held at the Beacon Theater and will be based on two classic Buddhist texts. That evening, He will make a brief appearance at A Concert for Peace and Reconciliation at Avery Fisher Hall, sponsored by Healing the Divide. In addition, His Holiness will spend one day at Tibet House engaging in a series of dialogues on ethics. His Holiness will also be presented with the International League for Human Rights’ Annual Award and will be the keynote speaker at the presentation of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation’s Humanitarian Award.
While in New York, His Holiness will inaugurate and offer the keynote address at the First Conference of Tibetan Buddhist Dharma Centers of the Americas; a private gathering of Dharma community leaders and students. This unique event, which is being organized by the Office of Tibet in New York, will provide a forum in which the participants may share their experiences and challenges of teaching and practicing the Dharma in the Americas. The Conference will also address the issue of Universal Responsibility and the Buddhist contribution to peace and harmony in the world.

His Holiness will be meeting with the local Tibetan communities of each city He visits. He has been traveling to the United States since 1979, with His most recent visit taking place during the month of May 2001.
