A Tibetan doctor is in Durban this week to promote an ancient holistic and alternative approach to medicinal treatment – particularly with regard to the treatment of HIV and Aids symptoms.

Dr Tenzin Namdul, a senior member of the Medical and Astrological Institute in Dharamsala, India, and a qualified doctor in the Tibetan healing tradition, said: “Many people all over the world have realised that the Tibetan way can assist with medical problems by using plants, science and philosophy.”

Namdul said alternative treatment had the potential of offering concrete benefits to HIV and Aids sufferers.

This fusion and holistic approach to health care were similar to Indian Ayervedic principals, said Namdul.

“We are in South Africa on a fact-finding mission and also to build a platform to promote Tibetan medicine,” he said.

Namdul said that there was enough scientific backing to support the views of his institute. “We have done studies on diabetes and on cancer and we have enough scientific research to back it up as well.”

While on his visit, he is scheduled to meet Prof Barry Kistnasamy, dean of the Nelson R Mandela Medical School of the University of Natal in Durban.
