DHARAMSHALA, Mar 18: The condition and whereabouts of a well-known Tibetan writer and poet named Gendun Lhundrup who was reportedly arrested on unspecified charges since December 2020 in eastern Tibet’s so-called Qinghai province, continues to remain unknown. After three years, his whereabouts, condition, and any legal proceedings against him remain undisclosed, as confirmed by multiple sources.

Gendun Lhundrup, a former monk from Rongwo Monastery in Rebkong County was apprehended at an undisclosed location three years ago. Reports indicate that prior to his arrest, he was subjected to prolonged surveillance by authorities due to suspicions of dissent and anti-China sentiments. However, no formal trial has taken place.

According to a source in Tibet who spoke to Radio Free Asia under anonymity said that Gendun Lhundrup’s family members have been denied access to him and have received no information regarding his situation or any charges against him. Despite numerous pleas, County authorities have remained silent on the matter, providing no clarity on whether he has faced trial or been sentenced.

Born in 1974 in Rebkong, Gendun Lhundrub underwent monastic education at Rebkong Dargye Monastery, Rebgong Rongpo Monastery, Labrang Tashi Kyil, and Serta Labrang. In October 2022, he released an anthology titled “Khorwa ” (Samsara, or cyclic existence). Gendun Lhundrub advocated for the freedom of expression for writers and artists, as evidenced by his writings on the website Waseng-drak.

His poetic works, which include pieces like “Black Rosary,” “Melody of Life,” and “White Book,” have earned him high esteem among Tibetans worldwide for his literary prowess.
