KATMANDU, Nepal — Nepalese police have broken up a protest of more than 1,000 Tibetan exiles demanding an end to the Chinese rule in their homeland.
The protesters chanting anti-Chinese slogans gathered at a Buddhist shrine in the northeastern edge of Kathmandu on Thursday to mark the anniversary of the March 10, 1959, riots in Tibet that led to the Chinese crackdown and the Dalai Lama’s dramatic flight across the Himalayas.
Police in riot gear told the crowd to disperse then pushed them back with bamboo batons. No serious injuries have been reported.
One protester who identified himself as Tashi said at least eight Tibetans have been detained.
