Trieste, Italy, August 26 – Yesterday was a memorable day for the Friuli-Venice Giulia Buddhist community when Sakya Trizin, the highest authority in the Sakya sect of Tibetan Buddhism, arrived in Trieste. In a packed room, Trizin was received by faithful Buddhists from the entire region. Among those present there was also Fabio Scoccimarro, President of the Trieste Province, as well as members of other churches such as the Swiss Methodist church and the Orthodox church with their respective pastors and representatives of ecumenical activity in Trieste.

“Despite the increasing technological progress,” he said, “the real goal for the world of today is true progress in terms of conscience”. Sakya Trizin said to continue to hope for the return home of exiled Tibetans. “The future,” he stressed, “is difficult to foresee, but the Chinese government has partially changed its position and torture and destruction of temples no longer occurs”. Speaking of religions, he stated that they must come together and not divide nations. “Relations with the Catholic church are good,” he added. “Jesus Christ was a highly elevated being and his teachings were very similar to ours. But all religions are necessary. Like medicine, every one suits different people”.
