Kathmandu – At least 50 people, including 16 army personnel, were reported missing in a landslide that buried settlements and an army post last night near the Nepal-Tibet border, a newspaper report said today.

The Nepali language daily Rajdhani reported that a massive landslide around 2200 hrs local time yesterday carried away settlements and an army post located at Ramche village in Rasuwa district near the Nepal-China border.

The report said the landslide deposited the debris from the settlements in the Trisuli River.

The site of the incident is located inside the Langtang National Park about 90 km northwest of the capital.

According to the report, there were 70 army personnel at the army post but the number of civilians in the area was not known.

The report said a massive rescue effort began late last night and it was being hampered by the sudden rise in the water level of the Trisuli River.

The newspaper said because of the rise in the water level, hydroelectric power stations at Trisuli and Devighat were closed down from midnight Friday.
