A Former Assembly Member and Veteran Journalist Passes Away

Dharamsala, August 5 – In a sad incident, Mr. Kunsang Paljor, a former member of the assembly of Tibetan People’s Deputies and a senior reporter of the Voice of Tibet radio service breathed his last this morning at 4 at Zonal Hospital, Dharamsala.

Mr. Kunsang Paljor authored a famous book titled Tibet: the Undying Flame, which highlighted his experiences under the communist China’s regime.

Mr. Paljor was not keeping well since a month. Mr. Paljor was born to Dodrak and Choekyi in Tanag Lholing, Shigatse.

Following the Chinese invasion of 1959, Mr. Paljor’s parents were subjected to various struggle sessions and all their belongings were confiscated by the Chinese. His father was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment.

His parents had died in struggle sessions during the Cultural Revolution.

Mr. Paljor studied Tibetan when he was nine years old. After turning fourteen, he was forcefully sent to Beijing to study Chinese policies and principles. In 1961, he was called back to Tibet where he worked with the “Tibet Daily” for seven years.

He also offered his service to the Central Tibetan Administration in Department of Information and International Relations, Department of Security, Research and Analysis Center. He had also worked as a member of the central executive committee of the Tibetan Youth Congress.

Mr. Paljor was also a member from Utsang region for the sixth and seventh Tibetan Assembly.

Mr. Paljor believed that the Tibetan media was developing but it would take time. In an interview he gave to the International Tibet Independence Movement, he said the media could contribute to the process of democratization.

He is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.
