Composer Philip Glass, opera vocalist Jessye Norman, experimental jazz act Kronos Quartet and Native American flautist R. Carlos Nakai are among the acts slated to perform at a Sept. 21 charity event at the Lincoln Center in New York. Organized by actor Richard Gere and Glass, the proceedings will raise money for non-profit Healing the Divide, and will be capped off with an appearance by the Dalai Lama.
The concert will mark the Dalai Lama’s first visit to New York since 1999. The Nobel Prize winner will be in New York from Sept. 17-21, and he will appear at the Lincoln Center concert to offer a “special address,” according to a release. His five-day New York visit will include a number of public talks and teachings.
Other artists slated to appear at the concert include Tibetan musician Nawang Khechog, African artist Foday Musa Suso and the Buddhist Monks from the Gyuto Tantric Choir. Tickets are on sale now, and range in price from $35-$250. They can be purchased via the Lincoln Center Web site.
Healing the Divide was established in January 2002, and raises money for impoverished communities throughout China, Mongolia, Russia, India, Nepal and Bhutan. The Dalai Lama will also visit San Francisco, Bloomington, Ind., Washington, D.C. and Boston during the month of September.
