DEHRA DUN – Tibetans residing in Uttaranchal are resentful of India’s ‘‘changed’’ stance on Tibet. They plan to express their unhappiness on the issue to the Union government through their government-in-exile at Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh.

‘‘If the Indian government believes that Tibet is a part of China, then what about our future and nationality?’’ questions Samkyi, general secretary of the Regional Tibetan Women’s Association.

She was attending a conclave of Tibetans organised here on Saturday to deliberate upon the ‘‘changed’’ position of the Indian government that came to the fore during Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s visit to China early this week. Scores of Tibetans from various parts of the state attended the meet.

There are about 15,000 Tibetans in Uttaranchal. They have been living in Dehra Dun, Nainital, Almora, Pithoragarh, Pauri and Hardwar since 1959. Tibetans consider the PM’s shift in the stand on Tibet as a ‘‘great blow’’ to their hope that they would be able one day to return to a free homeland.
