I am greatly encouraged that World Tibet Day continues to grow, and that it is being observed in so many cities and countries around the world. I am happy to know the cause of Tibet has such strong support. This event reaffirms the rights of the Tibetan people to their cultural and religious freedoms.

Along with other peoples, the Tibetan people have a rich and unique cultural heritage. I feel that we have much to offer the world – the concept of compassion, of harmony with the environment, and non-violence. World Tibet Day has helped greatly in deepening public appreciation for the richness of Tibetan culture and thought. I truly believe it would be a tragedy for humanity if the Tibetan culture was lost.

World Tibet Day has opened many hearts to the fundamental rights of the Tibetan people to preserve our culture and to practice our religion freely – and it has clearly raised public awareness about the present threat to the very existence of the Tibetan people. I am encouraged by the public support this event has built for the Tibetan cause.

With my prayers and best wishes.

Tenzin Gyatso
(His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama)
