Dharamsala – The long wait is finally over for the students of classes X and XII. The Central Board of Secondary Examinaiton (CBSE) results for the two classes were declared last week.

According to a data published by the Department of Education of the Central Tibetan Administration, this year’s results for the Tibetan schools do not appear to be very different from last year’s. For Class X, of the 1221 students that appeared for the examination, 707 students passed the exam, as compared to 1180 of last year with 716 making through.

Similarly for the Class XIIs, out of 921 students who appeared for the examination, 800 students cleared the exam this time. Last year there were 823 and from that, 735 students passed. Thus presenting no apparent change in the pass-fail ratio.

The data reveals the total pass percentage for Class X and XII at 57.90% and 86.86% respectively. A figure that shows a slight decline from last year, which was 60.67% and 89.30% respectively.

A few years back , the Department of Education has started ranking the schools based on the results. This practise has to an extent helped create a sense of competition ( a healthy one) and awareness about their standing when compared with other schools. It has even improved the performance of few schools.

In this year’s ranking, for the class XIIs, Central School for Tibetans (CST) in Bylakuppe and Kalimpong comes on the top with a 100% pass percentage. The CST Mussoorie, on the hand, is at the bottom with a pass percentage of 72.32 % .

In the class X results, Tibetan Children’s Village School, lower Dharamsala shows the highest pass percentage. CST Darjeeling is at the bottom.

The Department of Education is disappointed with the overall results and especially with the Class X. The Department had expected better results this time because of the improvement in the infrastructure and facilities during the last few years, especially after the Indian government provided additional funds under a planned budget a few years back.

Tsering Norbu of TCV Lower Dharamsala tops the list among Tibetan students with an aggregrate of 84% in the Class X result.

In Class XII, Kunchok Sangpo of TCV Bylakuppe has secured the highest with 83.6%. He is followed closely by Jampa Dolma of CST Bylakuppe and Thinley Wangdue of TCV Bylakuppe with an aggregrate of 82.8%.

Judging by the figure on the data, around 800 Tibetan students are expected to join the mainstream Indian colleges to do further studies this year. With a growing number of high school graduates and stiff competition, the students have a huge challenge ahead of them.
