DHARAMSHALA, April 29: The exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama has extended his congratulations to Mark Carney, the newly elected Prime Minister of Canada, following the Liberal Party’s victory in the general election under his leadership on Tuesday.

Mark Carney has led Canada’s Liberal Party to victory in the 2025 federal election, securing 168 seats in the 343-seat House of Commons. While this falls short of the 172 seats (49%) required for an outright majority, it positions the Liberals to form a minority government, potentially with support from smaller parties like the New Democratic Party (NDP) which secured seven seats (2%).

In a letter addressed to the new Prime Minister, the Tibetan leader lauded Canada’s democratic values and expressed his deep appreciation for the country’s continued support to the Tibetan cause.

“During my visits to Canada over the years, I have been deeply touched by the warmth of the friendship and affection that Canadians have shown me,” His holiness wrote. “I also take it as a great privilege to be an honorary Canadian citizen myself. I am an admirer of Canada, a multicultural society which enjoys a vibrant democracy.

The octogenarian leader also conveyed his gratitude to the government and the people of Canada for their steadfast support and assistance to the Tibetan people, a sentiment he said he had shared with Carney’s predecessors as well. “As I have mentioned to your predecessors, I would like to express my gratitude to the government and people of Canada for your continued support and assistance to the Tibetan people,” he wrote.

His Holiness concluded the letter by offering his prayers and good wishes to Prime Minister Carney and the Canadian nation. “I wish you every success in fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of the people of Canada and in contributing to global peace and stability,” he added.
