Inter-Parliamentary Group for Tibet launched in Spanish Parliament

DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 25: An Inter-parliamentary Tibet Group was launched in Madrid, at the Spanish Parliament by a cross-party group of 29 Senators on February 21, according to CTA run Tibet.net.

At the inauguration of the Inter-parliamentary Group for Tibet, the President of the group, Robert Masih Nahar, remarked that the group’s primary goals would be to promote broader international recognition of the Tibet issue and draw attention to the unresolved issue of Tibet.  Additionally, the group will work together with other inter-parliamentary Tibet Groups in the European countries as well as the Tibet Intergroup in the European Parliament to support the call for the appointment of an EU Special Representative for Tibetan Affairs with a mandate to promote substantive dialogue between envoys of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the People’s Republic of China and, call for the appointment of the “EU Special Representative for Tibetan affairs.”

Around 35 Senators and journalists attended the launch of the group. Tibetans, including CTA Representative Rigzin Genkhang, Ven. Thupten Wangchen and Thupten Gyatso, members of the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile, and Rigzing Dolma, President of the Tibetan community in Spain also attended the launch of the Inter-Parliamentary and spoke at the event.

The launch of the group, tibet.net said was the “logical step” after Senator Robert Masih Nahar participated in the 8th World Parliamentarian’s Convention on Tibet held in Washington DC in June last year, and felt encouraged by the Tibetan movement.

In a video message, Sikyong Penpa Tsering of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) is seen greeting the members of the Senate parliamentary in Spain while expressing his gratitude for their initiative to establish the first Inter-Parliamentary Group of Tibet in the Spanish Senate. “We need the support of the parliamentarians and the public from all parts of the world, ” said the executive head of the CTA.
