CONIFA Women’s cup cancelled over Covid-19 concerns

DHARAMSHALA, Mar. 23: The Tibetan National Sports Association (TNSA) announced Saturday that the much anticipated 2021 CONIFA Women’s Cup in Romania is cancelled over COVID-19 concerns. The apex Tibetan sports association earlier declared its participation in the CONIFA cup on March 8, noting the pride and importance for the Tibetan women’s team’s entry on the international platform.

“Women’s CONIFA 2021 Tournament scheduled in Romania has been cancelled! The entire TNSA staff and International chapter was at the helm of preparedness in order to facilitate 2 exciting months of training camp and then head to Romania for the tournament,” read the statement by Executive Director Tenzin Rinchen. TNSA in the statement also detailed the association’s proposed plan ahead of the 2-month preparation in the project; prelim camp was to be held at the VTC School, and the final camp in Delhi; venue, ground and Women’s [team] coach were already secured.

The TNSA Director further remarked, “I would urge our Tibetan Women National players and many other Women football enthusiasts to not give up as we will continue to explore new opportunities for our Women’s team.”

In the confirmation letter dated March 3, CONIFA Vice-President Kristof Wenczel had remarked, “Please be informed that in case the tournament is called off the qualified teams will not keep their position at a potential postponed or new tournament.” Tibet was also a part of CONIFA (Confederation of Independent Football Tournament) Men’s World Cup in 2018.
