DHARAMSHALA, MAR 5: Tibet has been listed as the second least free country, following Syria, in the latest 2020 list by Freedom House. The rankings are based on points allotted by the organization within the purview of freedom of speech and expression, democratic rights and limitations by the State.

Freedom House published a report citing the Chinese regime’s rigorous repression in Xinjiang. Although the existence of detention or the concentration camps has been duly dismissed by the communist government, the mass surveillance resulting in close monitoring of individuals has risen undoubtedly. It pointedly attacks the diminishing rights of the people under China.

The separate list conducted by the organization where Tibet ranks second, following Syria, gives an elaborate structure of points whereby 1 indicates severe repression and 4 represents relatively healthy environment. Both Syria and Tibet have the lowest points indicating strict regulations by the State along with the decreasing rate of human rights and values.

The list shows three columns; Countries; Total scores and Status; Political Rights; Civil Liberties. Tibet’s total shows 1 where Political Rights accord -2 and Civil Liberties accord +3. Syria’s total shows 0 where the rights’ column indicates -3 which cancels out +3 for liberties. Both the countries were on top when the last census was taken for the same freedom ranking.

With the repressive regime being tightened in Xinjiang as it was in Tibet and furthermore, the list suggests more intense mobilization by the Chinese state. It is a cause of concern for all the pro-democratic movements in the world where democracies and communist regimes alike create politically sensitive environments. The repeated rank holding where points are allotted for the least free countries showcase the ever-growing intensive human rights abuses in countries such as Tibet, Syria and more.
